Ran my XD out of Diesel Today

Thought I had 10 more miles in the tank and found out I was wrong today. Ran my truck out of fuel today. I was nervous about losing the prime but it kicked over after trying two times and then pressing the accelerator while it was cranking. Ran a smidge rough for a mile but then was fine. Low Pressure in Fuel System light came on while driving and then when I started it up the second time. It went off after it sat for an hour and I started it up a third time. Everything seems fine but is there anything I should be concerned with?

The life of the high pressure pump just took a hit of 10k miles or so, no fuel no lube no lube, aluminum on aluminum for just a few seconds and there will be problems down the road, make sure you are running a fuel additive.....always...every tank

if you do have a problem and its under warranty for $%@& sake don't tell them you ran it out of fuel ....you might want to drain the separator...maybe change the primary fuel filter..you may not get so lucky the 2nd time !!xxx

You will be just fine. Do not worrie about it the whole metal on metal thing is a bit much there is still fuel in the system just not enough to keep your engine running.

For the next guy that finds himself in this situation...

Step 1: Add Fuel
Step 2: Hit the start button atleast 3 or 4 times with your foot off of the brake. This will prime the fuel system and push 90% of the air out of the lines.
Step 3: Start Normally and drive away and say to yourself thank F*ck for Electric Lift Pumps.

There is a reason you use assembly lube when building a engine, metal on metal is a big deal, even if only for a few seconds. Bigger things, yeah like the bill for the repair when the injection pump grenades. But in all odds the next owner will have the problems )
What does... f*ck for electric fuel pumps mean?

I think hes thankful for not having to manually prime the system. Not sure if its the same deal or not but last year i repowered mu lobster boat I took out my 375 hp john deere and put in a 575 hp cat. The JD had 13000 hrs on it and no problems with fuel pumps. i dont know how many times i lost fuel due to plugged filters.sometimes youd get a week and sometimes you could get your change interval. It was the same with the boat i had bfor with a 300 hp cummins. Same with everyone else in the fleet.its been that way for i dont know how long.ive only heard tell of one fuel system rebuild.my point is i think you may be o k. Dont lose any sleep over it.
