Diesel fuel additive

How often should I add the fuel additive in the 5.0 Cummins? In my heavy equipment, I usually add it about every other tank, but it sounds like it might be more critical with the XD.

Where did you hear that it's more critical for our engines?

I usually add some outboard ashless 2 stroke mix about once a month. it's cheap, and I feel like it works, but whatever you add... be prepared to be told by someone else that it's pointless lol

Why would you add it and what does it do?

You only realistically need to add it in the winter for your own piece of mind to help the fuel from gelling. There is no benefit and it doesn't really improve fuel economy

I think its waste of 2 stroke oil. Diesel already is an oil.

The only additive I put in is this and only during winter. One bottle is good for 4 tanks of diesel.

Stanadyne Performance

The reasons are for increased fuel pump lubricity, water absorption/separation, keeping injectors clean and prevent fuel gelling in winter. There are more things it does but those are my major reasons. Being using this stuff since diesel fuels switched to low Sulphur diesels and our cold winters in Alberta. Plus with the in-bed fuel tank, it kept the diesel fresh and protected the tank. Used it in the Duramax since 2005(?) and never looked back!

Good stuff

I just add a bit to my tank every time. Same with my lobster boat. Different amounts are" supposed " to do different things from moisture absorption to anti gelling to added lubrication. I use kleen flo Its easy to get but honestly im not sure if it does anything. As far as using stuff just for winter doesnt winter fuel have anti gel stuff anyway?

I used to add Diesel Kleen, then stopped after seeing crap in my fuel filters and losing what I thought was ~1 mpg at the time. Then I read on here how fuel additives aren't really needed on modern diesel engines, etc. so I stopped using it and my fuel filters are staying cleaner. So I don't use any fuel additive anymore. Have had no issues thus far knock on wood.
