2018 F150 Diesel is a go!

We've all seen the photos of on-road test vehicles but now several news stories quote Ford saying F150 3.0L diesel sales will begin shortly after the 2018 F150 is released in the fall.

Ford is marketing to customers wanting more tow and haul capability. It will be lighter, use the new 10 speed auto, and have a goal of improving the overall mpg numbers for the F150 stable.

We'll see if the best selling pickup manufacturer hits it out of the park.

This segment really seems to rely heavily on fule mileage on top of capability for sales. Many friends purchased the Ram EcoDiesel due to mileage (I think that has been reduced with TSB reprogramming unfortunately) but Fiat seems to have done pretty well for themselves. I wonder if Ford's engine will be similar to 30mpg or if it will lie in the middle of the Titan and Ram. I drove the Ram EcoDiesel when I purchased my Ram 2500 Cummins diesel and to compare the two, the EcoDiesel sounded like a sewing machine. There really wasn't much choice for me once I read about the catastrophic engine failures. No pressure Ford... Muahahaha. The Titan is a much more fun vehicle to drive I must say vs the Ram EcoD.

Looks awesome for sure. I do wish the Titan had Auto-4WD. That would be a nice addition (nudge, nudge Nissan NA)

This is another example of vehicle I want always being a year or two out. The F150 diesel would have checked most of my WANTS boxes, more than any other truck on the market. I knew it was 12-18 months out at a minimum though.

On the converse, I'm happy with my Titan XD Cummins and it is here in my hands and meets my needs now...and will continue to for years to come.

Has a HD truck/vehicle ever had an auto-4WD/fulltime 4WD option? I think manufacturers are probably worried about the reliability of that type of system in a powerful truck designed that see constant heavy loads. It would be nice though.

Do those count ?
Also, the XD is more in par with the F150 ( towing & payload ) spec wise.

Lol, yes that definitely counts. I imagine a super heavy duty system like that can't be cheap to design/build though. Cost to build a reliable auto-4WD system for a HD truck vs willingness of customers to pay for such a system is probably why we don't see them in production. I might be way off though. Perhaps manufacturers will start putting them in the HDs as well...???

I looked at the ecodiesels and the mpg are nice, the towing isn't all that great. If the Ford is similar to the ecodiesel in towing and mpg, I think the Titan diesel will still have a certain market that this truck applies too where the Ford and Dodge will be in direct competition.
