Engine Fuel Consumption

I've had my XD for about 6 months now and I noticed sometimes the MPG gauge drops drastically. I will start around 14 MPG and when I take my foot off the gas; the bar would go to about 30 MPG. This is what i usually see but i have experienced times when i take my foot off the gas the gauge and bar hoovers around 8 - 10 MPG and the smell of diesel fuel increases. After one of these events happen; the gauge showed me that i was burning gas at 6.3 MPG. The first time i experienced it; the reduced engine power light came on but i don't what triggered it. Has anyone else experienced this with their XD?

Yep good ol Regen..........I put my first 2 1/2 gallons of def in at about 3100 miles or so, dont remember the exact. Reduced engine light? Sounds like your close to running out of DEF.

That's normal...other than the "burning gas" part! (sorry...I couldn't resist)

Just hammer down and don't look at it...unfortunately it's doing what it was designed to do.

I've filled the tank twice already with 2 1/2 gallon DEF fluid. This truck is something else. The DEF System Error came on again today. It's the second time that's happened as well. I guess it's just the growing pains of buying a new truck in it's first year.

2.5gallons is normal, for you, I'm guessing. Modern diesels use roughly 3 gallons of DEF for every 100 gallons of fuel, or 3%. I'm at 4,000 miles and have used 7 or 8 gallons of DEF (something like this). Unless you have a pre 2015 diesel, that was likely skirting EPA rules, you will use DEF and experience regens. It's that simple.

No, you bought a modern Diesel, it has nothing to do with Nissan & more to do with the technology that the EPA has mandated.
