DEF Refilling

How many miles is everyone getting before refilling the DEF? I picked up a 2.5g jug in a box the other day.

Most of the diesel trucks I've looked at run about 300 miles per gallon of DEF....basically a penny per mile. The nissan has a 4.5gallon DEF tank so it looks like you've used ~3gallon of DEF in 1200 miles....basically on target.

Good to hear that it is running perfectly fine. Lots of new diesel owners don't know about DEF, so its probably a good thing to inform the member ship about this fluid and how often it needs to be replaced.

Please explain this DEF. I will be adding this every how many miles in addition to changing the motor oil? Sorry, never had a diesel.

You're way off. A 2015 ram 2500 can get 7-9k depending on driving conditions. miles out of tank of DEF which is only 6 gallons.

It's an ammonia a based synthetic fluid it just changes the output of the exhaust by chemical change to reduce nox levels... It's a joke, a complete pain in the ass to poor the jugs. When it spills it will dry and leave a white residue on stuff. It will freeze at -8'C. The dodge system is a terrible design my 13 5500 service truck freezes up and derated the engine all the time in the winter. So I ended up putting in a delete kit to remove it as it was just too much b.s

I wonder when the delete kits will be available for us in the Titan XD. It wasn't a pain in the ass to refill it but it's just something else to worry about and buy. It's about $15 for the 2.5g jug that I picked up and I refilled it in my garage without issues. The tank is 4.5g but after I emptied the 2.5g refill into the tank the truck said the tank was full. I put a lot of miles on my vehicles so it looks like I'll have to buy 2 of these $15 refills each month. Tomorrow marks 2 weeks with this truck for me and 1200 miles came up today.....

Maybe....here is a reference...

https://www.cumminsfiltration.com/pd...es/MB10033.pdf

It's basically 2% DEF per gallon of fuel. That is 1 gallon of DEF per 50 gallons of fuel but it varies. When I check with other truck owners, they seem to use more than you would with long interstate treks. The OP suggested he used 3gallons in 1200 miles. I'm not surprised by that. Sounds like you are?

I don't own a Titan so I can't say what it will get but you said you looked into all diesels. I have 9,900 miles on my ram and have used roughly 9 gallons of DEF. and yes most of did seem to go on long interstate trips. Drove from Baton Rouge to S. Carolina and used a good bit. But 300 miles a gallon is substantially lower than what I'm getting. The Titan may be be different but for other trucks it uses so little it's almost a non issue. I'd prefer to be without it but it's not a big deal.
I'd say 1200 miles and 3 gallons is horrible.
