Forgive me if this sounds like a dumb question but what advantage is the to having more lugs on a wheel? Light duty having 5 and heavy duty having 8 and the Titan only having 6. Is this due to torque or something? I've often wondered this but have never gotten an answer.

The simplest answer is cross section of clamping material. So to keep commonality with other lug nuts, more lugs are added to increase total thickness. The alternative route is larger diameter lugs and/or increase the lug centerline and the surface area of contact between the hub and wheel.
