This post will end in mostly a question, but first a story that leads up to that question.

My wife and I bought a 2019 Pro4X brand new at the beginning of 2020. Last month I finally had the spare funds to delete and tune my Titan. I put a 0hp tune on the truck because my goal is fuel economy. By tank calculation I'm seeing the fuel economy has improved from 13.6L/100km to 12.5L/100km. The indicated L/100 has not dipped below 9.9L/100km since removed the dpf, but my best indicated economy was 8.7L/100km with the emissions still intact.

One day I had to leave home while the truck was completely cold after removing the dpf and noticed the turbos hunting really badly, ended up making the engine rpm hunt as well. I hooked the ez lynk back up to the truck and started data logging. 4 psig drive pressure, 1.1psig boost at idle. Peak drive pressure of 61psig. Can see the turbos hunt and in general the ecu seems to be holding boost and excessive drive pressure, and has too much gain on the reaction to throttle position.

My best guess is that they didn't adjust the turbo maps to accommodate the reduction of backpressure and that the egr system no longer needs to see the exhaust pressure above the charge pressure. This is leaving a lot of fuel economy on the table.

The tuner offered to reduce the drive pressure for me. However I have been around engines, hot rodding, etc since I was a small child. I can see how I want the maps to be shaped for the turbos. The problem is I need to play with it and make small adjustments until it's perfect. For my driving conditions I'm convinced I can get the hand calculated average down to 9L/100km. No tuner, no matter how polite is going to want to deal with me asking for small changes everyday for the next three months.

So I thought, okay, I'll register as a technician with ez lynk, they have a calibration profile in their ecu editor, it'll be super simple... play with the map, get it perfect... figure out how to block the codes for the dpf delete... Not so simple. I needed a bin. So, I bought the xcal from Nissan for my ecu part number. Dumped it into ez lynk, the data was all disorganized and clearly something was very wrong with it. I thought okay, maybe I need to convert the intel hex to binary, so I wrote an application that did just that. Ez lynk ecu editor did not recognize that as a valid bin.

Now I've opened up the can of worms known as WinOLS... WinOLS recognized both the xcal and my bin. Great, but it's the demo version so I can't export the bin to see if I send it to the truck via ez lynk... After looking at the cost for a WinOLS license, checksum license and the cost for the davos files for the ISV5.0 I'm starting to understand why tuners are so secretive.

Now my question: If I were to pay all the license fees, forum seller fees, successfully write a tune that gave an average of 9-10L/100km (24-26usmpg) mixed driving, 0 hp/0 tq. increase, gave some additional exhaust braking, and also caused throttle response to more closely resemble a 6.0L psd. Would anyone be willing to pay $200usd for 4 weeks or $300usd for permanent support on ez lynk? This would only ever be a 0/0 tune, I would never release anything I wouldn't run on my own engine and I will not turn up my truck.

My interest is genuine. I tend to drive one way. If I don’t get feedback from people I can’t make longevity better.
I had no issues with the cruise in v2.5 on an empty truck. I was running 70-73 mph most of the time. When running around town I want to hear that rumble so I rarely get into the turbos.

I just recently switch to v2.5. Ran v2.45 for a while. I am definitely getting a couple mpg better now. I have been getting around 19 mpg with 90 percent highway. I do stay on it in town because I love hearing the turbos lol. Only thing I have noticed overall is it seems I really have to coax the truck to go or get it to downshift when cruising around in comparison to a previous tune I have. This is when I'm trying to accelerate around town. Seems to me it's either go fast or gain speed slower than traffic and not a lot of middle ground. Thanks for everything man!

I'm starting to get nervous. There are a number of very correct values coming out of the api. There is still a ton of procedural work to do to get the editor to the point of actually writing an xcal. I am really looking forward to taking a xcal from my editor, converting it to a binary and uploading that to ez lynk without doing any more editing in their ecm editor.

I know some of you may have been wondering, I know I certainly was... but I found out today, according to the calibration, we have an eight cylinder engine. Just incase you were curious.

I'm currently using the editor to do some research on different parameters that I used to use a text document for. I'm also trying to compare data to make sure the values I'm getting are correct. There are a few that don't make sense and need a bit of investigation.

I'm getting excited to do some real work on 2.51. I got a small start on it, then ran out of time. Now that I'm making so much progress on the editor, I'm struggling to give it up. Oh my goodness school hours, so hard to concentrate!

Things are going to start moving pretty quickly, or it will feel that way. Longevity phase two is just around the bend. I'm going to spend a little bit more time on the charge air maps before moving onto timing and fuel pressure. I'm hoping to be working on the calibration in my editor by this weekend, next weekend on the far side.

So I'm digging away, slowly adding features, while researching cruise control a little bit. Realize I didn't finish converting the managers to their transport array. I fixed that, but the file size didn't change. Weird. It should have. Research some more, figure out one of my data types is reading something by length instead of just four bytes.... fix that. Data size is down to 3mb now, which is just fantastic. The xcal and the ecfg combined are almost 20mb. The raw binary is 3.4mb. That shows you how inefficient the engineering formats are.

That said, I have to go back and make a bunch of changes to my document manager and parameter components now that I'm actually bringing in the right format. The sad thing is, this is all documented, but I was getting so excited at progress I didn't keep up with documenting the new components. The documenting would have thrown warnings earlier and this mistake would have been avoided. It will cost me a few hours of work, so a bit disappointing.

Since I want to be able to let anyone use my editor, if they so choose, they need to have their own files to work with. My server is setup so that after a unique id expires, all of the content on the server for that unique id is removed.

In debugging that means I'm constantly and manually emptying out my data folder. I added a simple means to load a specific unique id. This isn't the intent of the editor, but for debugging purposes, it helps. Well I found, that for some reason my client is not actually sending back the uid it was provided. In an earlier version I had the uid hard coded. Now it's dynamic like it's supposed to be, and doesn't actually send that number to the server. So every time the server responds it sends back a new uid. Hopefully I'll get that fixed tomorrow. This feature will also allow the editor to be demonstrated.

I believe I mentioned that I had to rework how the application state was handled, that seems to be working well and I can successfully save and retain changes to specific parameters of any manager. Next I'll have to bring in the text input and data validation.

I can't believe the amount of procedural work I have to do and how slow going it is when I can only put one or two hours a day into the editor. Styling often takes the back burner, but occasionally I need to see how something actually looks.

I have to keep going over the parameters, looking at values. The names and managers are so long, I don't think I could ever memorize them, but I am starting to see how some of the relationships between them are formed. So far I believe I've seen four or five different places where some kind of maximum shaft rpm for the turbocharger is specified. The cruise control logic is... well, daunting. There are a lot of settings in the cruise control manager.

Oh, test your memory... and your reading! I found the reason why some y axis tables have a two byte element count as the leading two bytes... if it has no related x_axis id. Some y axis data types are only used as an axis of a Z axis data type.

I feel I should make some kind of update, but thus far everything has been very procedural. Lots of small steps with big sections of debugging.

I was successful in fixing my state management and I think I have a fairly robust system in place. It seems to work and uses the useReducer hook.

Today I spent a good couple hours working on the api. I've been doing so many tests with the unique id system working that there was about a gigabyte worth of the same file stored over and over again. I was manually reseting the uid database and deleting the file structure previously. Now I have a reset endpoint where, using the server itself, I just go to my reset endpoint and it removes all except my demonstration uid.

By the schedule I posted previously, I'm probably not too far off of where I wanted to be. I still don't have a clear time line of when I'll be going into alpha testing on the editor. When I get to alpha testing, I'll be using the editor to work on Longevity V3. I will also open up the editor for any interested party to have a look at. I will have the stock calibration setup as a demonstration.

Longevity V2.51 => Experimental.V3.00

Since the editor has become the all encompassing project, when it starts coming online I'll already be working on the timing for longevity. The small changes I was going to do with V2.51 will be rolled into V3.00.

This will be followed with a rapid uptick in social media and you tube content as I start aggressively pushing to make sales of Longevity.

Business

Sales have reached the point now where the business has paid for the majority of its start up expenses if I ignore they were deducted from the disability cheques.

I have to focus on getting longevity perfect, then moving on to HeavyHaul and TurboRoo. I let myself get distracted with some different product ideas, putting together packages, but I just don't have the resources to do that yet. So I need to focus on getting longevity on as many trucks as possible, then, making the gravy on the DLC tunes.

This business must be successful and profitable, like my life depends on it! Longevity serves two purposes, to offer a tune that will extend the lifespan of your truck and at a price that gets my foot in the door.

Anyone who wants to turn their truck up, isn't afraid of the expense that comes with that. HeavyHaul and TurboRoo will be purchasable DLCs for longevity to scratch that performance itch.

Oh so excited! I keep making bits of progress that are very visual. I just had to share that my state is continuing to work correctly and is actually modular and buildable. Now, when I modify a parameter it keeps a history of modifications, which will allow undo. The other thing it does is highlight the modified parameter and changes the highlighting of the manager to show that it has modified parameters.

it’s good business sense to offer several different options. I won’t run the tire shredding tune all the time but to have the option is nice

There are a couple local diesel tuning shops around here. I'm planning on stopping by sometime to let them know about your tune, since I have seen a few 5.0 Titans in my town.
