People choose to buy trucks for many reasons, but ostensibly one of those reasons is to tow and haul with it. After all, it is that capability that sets a truck apart from most other classes of vehicle. So in that spirit I decided to put together a little comparison that shows how the Nissan Titan XD stacks up against its main opponents.

Let's start with the Nissan Titan XD. The Nissan Titan XD has a tow capacity of more than 12,000 lbs, and its payload comes in at 2,000 lbs+. This is supported by a new beefy chassis and components that are based on the NV2000 HD cargo van that debuted in 2012. As nice as those numbers sound, it doesn't put the Titan XD at the forefront on either count.

The Ford F-150 has a maximum tow capacity of 12,200 lbs, and a max payload of 3,300 lbs. That's quite a bit of weight to put in the back of your truck!

The Chevy Silverado 1500 actually has very similar ratings to the Nissan Titan. Its tow capacity comes in at 12,000 lbs, and it has a payload just under the Titan at 1,820 lbs.

Coming in at the bottom of the pack is the Ram 1500. It has a tow capacity of up to 10,650 lbs, and its payload comes in at 1,930 lbs.

So it looks like as far as capabilities go the Nissan Titan is keeping up with the standard. It is not pushing to be the class leader though. The Ford F-150 seems to have that on lock at the moment.

I think it's most likely that the Titan XD beats the 12,200 lbs of the F150 and at least a possibility that it beats it by a fairly substantial margin.

Ultimately, the Cummins Diesel will pull the load at a much more comfortable level than the Ford Ecoboost or the other V8 gassers in this list. With such a low RMP level for max torque, towing will be a much more pleasurable experience with the Titan. Also, as Nissan claims, fuel mileage will be much better when towing a load with the Titan XD over any of the rest of the examples above.

The ISV would be comfortable pulling 18,000lbs behind it.

Remember the v8 diesel that set the standard was the 215hp 7.3l Powerstroke.

towing vs ford

I know ford advertises f150 can tow 12000 lbs. I checked the inventory of 2 ford dealerships that sell a lot of trucks. Not one f150 on either lot would tow 12000. The max I found was around 10000.

It always bothers me when car companies advertise this way. I guess you have to special order one that will tow 12000 ? How will the lower gearing effect gas mileage? Does it add a lot of extra cost?

Not the way I like to see a company do business.

Just my 2 cents.

Stupid me thinking this was a thread with some actual new information.

In order to get the 12k# tow, you need the 3.5tt with 3.73 gears. That is only available with the F-150 HD and they are rare on dealer lots. Honestly, I think 10k# is pushing it with a 5000 lb truck.

Is the towing capacity of the F150 that is rated to 12,000lbs according to SAE J2807? To the best of my knowledge the Titan XD will be rated according to J2807. If the F150's ratings are not based on any standard, and just Ford's word then I would hazard the guess that the Titan is actually more capable than the F150.

Towing 12K with an F-150 will be limit. I think the XD will have a 12K towing capacity with the gas engine and the standard rear end (3.42 or 3.73) and maybe 14K with an 4.10 optional. and the Cummins. Dont forget this tranny is in the High Output Ram with 900 ft of torque! The XD package will be hard to beat, Cummins, Aisin, AMM axle. Can't wait to build one online!

It's not exactly the same tranny. The housings do share a number of similarities but that doesn't mean the internals are physically the same. I would hazard a guess it's a good transmission and I too believe it is either the big tranny, or based on it but there is no solid evidence yet indicating that it is the same tranny.

Yes, Ford switched to the SAE standard with the 2015 F150.

As for towing with the 3.5L EcoBoost, I cruise at 1600rpm on the flats towing an 8-8.5K # travel trailer. Very relaxing.

It's a capable engine with a peak torque of 420 ft-lb at 2500 rpm , surprisingly low rpms at peak torque for a gas engine. And it has 365 HP at 5000 rpm so you can race up those hills with the engine screaming if you want too.

But it sucks gas when you work it (I get maybe 10.5 mpgUS towing my rig), and this is where the Cummins should shine, The Cummins probably won't get up that mountain as fast though, as it has less HP.

And besides better mileage, engine braking should be much better with the Cummins, especially if exhaust braking is implemented.

Doubt if I would want to tow much more than 10K with either of these engines though. Any of the bigger diesels would do that just fine.

Fuel consumption when putting it to work is one of the reasons why I can see the Titan doing well with those in construction as there are a lot of situations where they need to haul heavy loads and push trucks to their limits.

And for us Snow Birds and other heavy travel trailer users too. The Ecoboost wants Premium gas to get that power when fully loaded up. Think I would rather pay for diesel, especially as its price relative to gas has been dropping.

Ford has been known to tinker with the weight of the trucks in order to achieve some of there tow ratings. By tinkering I mean removing things such as bumpers etc. in order to get the GVW vehicle weight down.

Dropping the bumper was to get the MAX payload numbers for a class of truck. A relatively useless number they could publish in their brochures and promote in their Ads. Total B.S. for sure and probably asked for by the Marketing people, not the engineers.

The real payload for an individual truck as it comes from the factory with all its options and a full tank of gas is posted in the yellow label on the door jamb ... and is correct according to those who have checked it on their new trucks.

What's worse, IMHO, is that Ford does not publish the MAX possible payloads for the F250 diesels in their brochures. The diesel is considered an option, and the Max payload you see in the brochures (3-4K #) is just for the gas F250s. Many folks are surprised when their fully loaded new F250 diesel comes in at under 2000# payload. Again, another stupid marketing decision.

But I'm sure Ford follows the SAE protocol for towing capacity as they claim. I don't see how the Marketing types could distort those numbers. And actually it's not that strenuous, or so I'm told, but does give a standard for comparison, much like the EPA mileage numbers.

I hate when advertisements are misleading. I just want to know what the truck is capable of. Not what the truck is capable of if I remove this, and do that, etc, etc...

I think that they will be waiting until the actual release to give some of those specific details. These seem to be pretty transparent about the whole thing from the Truckumentary videos, so I hope they continue that when all the details are released.

Someone else mentioned they might be waiting until the last minute, so the competition has to scramble to raise their numbers. Seems logical to me.

A picture of the Titan XD towing a trailer has been leaked and the trailer is a very reasonable size. Not sure if it was filled to weigh it down a bit more but it should be enough to suit most people's needs.

When you check Trailer Life Magazine Pick Up Truck Towing Guide 2015 and all manufacture pick up truck brochures (Ford, Ram, Chev and all the other guys) you will not find a crew cab 1/2 ton 4 X 4 that will do 12000 lbs towing. You have to settle for a regular cab two wheel drive. Read the fine print.

2016 Nissan Titan you nailed it CONGRATULATIONS.
