I have a 16 platinum reserve with the 5.0 Cummins. It has 28k miles and I got a decent deal on it.

I however didn’t know about the 5.0 Cummins crankshaft issues because I failed to do proper research like a

the ONLY issue I can see with the truck is that it shifts a little funny, but I understand that’s kinda par for the course and it doesn’t bother me.

My wife and I REALLY like this truck and I want to make it work, but a 20k repair bill for the crankshaft scares the crap out of me. I’d love y’all’s advice and input.

p.s The only towing I plan to do is on my fishing boat or taking on of our horses to vets or into town.

There isn't enough data to definitively identify the cause of failure of the crankshafts.

There are a few theories, but nothing has been proven.

If you're in a jurisdiction where it is allowed, deleting your truck would be the best way to extend its lifespan.

Okay, I did purchase an extended powertrain warranty for 50k miles. I guess I’m just asking what’s the probability that I’m going to be getting an engine replacement within that time period. And if I did the delete and voided my extended warranty, what is the estimated price to replace?

No one can give you a probability because the root cause is not know. I’ve pointed out in another thread, every diesel engine has had some confidence shattering problem over its life span.

It’s happened to enough engines to make people talk about it, but it hasn’t happened to enough to force Nissan/Cummins into a recall.

I don’t think it’s a ticking time bomb, I think it’s bad luck. There are people making 1000ft.lbs without snapping the crank. Therefore it must be some very harsh, transient event that hasn’t been identified yet. That means it’s preventable.

I can’t reassure you, I wish I could. Replacing the engine on your own dime is a massive, painful pill.

And the rough shifting? (Forgive me, I’m not a mechanic. I only have an intermediary mechanical knowledge) Could the rough shifting be associated with the crank? So far there is no idle issues or CEL. As far as I can tell it only shifts rough under throttle when passing, or at higher RPM. It doesn’t seem to be associated with a particular gear. Although I have only put maybe 400 miles on the truck since I bought it. (I’m a truck driver and am not home except weekends)

I estimate it would be years before I put 50k miles on the vehicle as my current usage sits. So the warranty will cover me for a while.

These transmissions often shift rough when unloaded. With a load, it's like driving a stick of butter. Smooth shifting, better suspension feel, and excellent handling.

As for the crankshaft, don't worry yourself into throwing away a beatiful, capable truck. Forums for any vehicle are victim-biased, as many people join them becuase they have a problem. Most ISV Titan owners are not on the forum, driving around problem-free.

I suggest kepping the truck, delete and tune it to prevent emissions failure as that accounts for 95% of potential problems you'll ecounter on any post-2006 diesel engine, and use a sythetic 5W40 or 15W40 engine oil to better protect the engine.

NavyCuda sells the best tune you can get for these trucks and it cost significantly less than the other guys. His goal is prolonging the life of the ISV engine once deleted. You can read about it here:

I have a 2018 with 142000 miles and with very limited issues. I did a delete at 90K. the one problem I had was the coolant sensor that seems to be common. And I had to clean my back pressure line and sensor due to it getting plugged up with soot. And it Did leave me stranded at work once couple weeks ago when it was -15 below zero with -40 below wind chills and I had the original batteries. bought two new ones and found out the one was very bad. no other problems. been very good truck.

I am a 2016 a bone stock PR 5.0 Cummins Diesel owner and I've had her for 6 years now and she had been almost flawless. The first couple years I had the HVAC issue, the poor heated and cooled seat issue and the dead petal and hard shifting problem. Everything was fixed or repaired with software updates new designed perforated front seat foam. I love my XD and I pull a 7500 lbs. Jayco WhiteHawk camper with it. Don't listen to the nay sayers and let them scare you there are lots of us XD Cummins owners that are today enjoying our trucks.

My 2016 is just hitting 100k. Had the coolant sensor issue and a DEF injector issue (same DEF injector as the Ram Cummins, so the part was easily obtainable in the aftermarket). I had the High pressure turbo go on me, but aside from that no other issues. I pulled a 10k lb. travel trailer around the US for 7 months straight putting 18k miles on the truck. Didn’t struggle much except at the continental divide in Montana, I didn’t want get over 45.
